We’re all familiar with personality tests. Some are spot on, others often grasp at straws. Whether you trust them or not, you can usually gather at least a little insight from the results. You probably think you know everything there is to know about these types of assessments, right?
Enter: the Enneagram.
The what? – Let me explain.
The Enneagram is less of a test than it is a journey to self-discovery. Rather than simply telling you about yourself, it guides you along so you can tell you about who you are. Still confusing? No worries, I’ll continue.
The Enneagram encompasses nine different personality types–The Perfectionist, The Helper, The Performer, The Romantic, The Investigator, The Loyalist, The Enthusiast, The Challenger and The Peacemaker. With this, the assessment capitalizes on inaccuracy, allowing you to be the true judge of your personality type.
Self-awareness is the key to proper self-care, and your Enneagram type is a fantastic way to guide you along the way.
This week we are honoring TWO women who spend their free time running XOEnneagram. XOEnneagram is a website that serves as a resource for those looking to learn about the Enneagram.
So, Laura shared their story: “Jenn and I were drinking matcha one day and talking about the Enneagram – all the ways it was helping us grow and change for the better. And we each had this need to be creating something new and exciting. Self-care is something that’s really important to both of us – bringing more positivity and kindness into our lives and sharing that with others. Suddenly, we put all of it together! We realized we needed to start an insta-community of people like us who wanted to learn to take better care of ourselves and use the Enneagram as an amazing tool in the process. Then, tons of people joined the conversation right away and it’s been growing every day. We created a website to serve as a gathering place for all things self-care, the Enneagram, and positivity.”
These amazing ladies also answered our favorite questions, of course!
Favorite Book: “Right now? The Road Back to You. Obsessed.”
Favorite Beverage: “Red wine…Matcha…Kombucha…Moscow Mules, oh gosh I love it all. But if we’re playing which drink would you rather be stranded on an island with, definitely red wine.”
What are you passionate about? “Self-Care…learning to be kind and gracious toward yourself and walk yourself gently toward more mental health, more peace and calm, and more meaning and vibrancy in life. The kind of self-care where you strengthen yourself and support yourself in order to make a positive contribution to the world!”
What do you do really, really well? “Parallel parking. There isn’t a parking spot between Cali and NYC that I couldn’t fit into. No kidding! But on a more serious note – I’m really good at bringing calm into chaos.”
If you could do anything with your time (regardless of obligations and finances), what would you do? “At the moment, I would stay here on this cozy couch forever watching Queer Eye and The Office and drinking red wine haha! But to be more honest…I love singing and songwriting, but it’s sort of a passion I’ve put in my back pocket to save for later. I would pursue that right now if finances were not an issue.”
Favorite Book: “Finding God in the Wave by Mike McHargue”
Favorite Beverage: “Cabernet Sauvignon all the way. Also, I love a good almond milk matcha latte.”
What are you passionate about? “Encouraging creativity in people, learning about myself and others through the Enneagram, and noticing small but beautiful things in life.”
What do you do really, really well? “I’ve been told I’m good at being kind to strangers and making people feel included. Also, I’m good at spotting really cute dogs wherever I go :)”
If you could do anything with your time (regardless of obligations and finances), what would you do? “”Oh, wow! So many things. I would keep bees and run a couple low-maintenance creative projects (like XO Enneagram) with friends. Then, I would also make time for lots of fun mini vacations with my husband.”
So, are you interested in learning more about the Enneagram and pinpointing your type?
Although there are quick Enneagram tests online, according to the XOEnneagram gals, “Enneagram tests are usually inaccurate. In the rich and ancient tradition of the Enneagram, this is how you will find your number: listen to the unique experience of each number and discover which one rings the truest to you.”
Sounds simple enough, right? Read and see what resonates with you most. There are many wonderful books about the Enneagram. On top of finding your truest self, these books make for great conversation starters. At your next party or get together, ask your friends to discover their Enneagram or better yet…have people guess! You’ll be surprised at the deep conversations you can start over an Enneagram book and a delicious bottle of wine!
Here are some of the tried & true books on the Enneagram:
#1 The Road Back to You by Ian Morgan Cron & Suzanne Stabile: This book is an Enneagram staple. It is the perfect introductory read; it is easy to digest and provides real-life examples that you can easily use to analyze yourself.
#2 The Path Between Us by Suzanne Stabile: This book dives deep into the Enneagram and its place within relationships. It highlights the different ways that the Enneagram types see the world and helps you build more of an understanding and acceptance for others. Trying to figure out how to deal with your Type 8 The Challenger of a husband? Or perhaps you don’t quite understand your Type 1 best friend, The Perfectionist. The truth is, we all could use a little help cultivating healthy, positive relationships with others!
#3 The Wisdom of the Enneagram: If you want a more comprehensive resource, The Wisdom of the Enneagram is a great book to have on your shelf. In great detail, this book discusses your Enneagram type as well as wing numbers, stances, and triads. If these sound like gibberish words to you and you’re aching to learn more (ahem, The Investigator?), grab a copy and dive in!
“We are doing this project because we have so much fun doing it together and we feel continually excited about the content. So although we have no idea where it will take us, we know it’s gonna be good!”
